The art and science of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) still continues to astound and bewilder us, even thousands of years after it is thought to have begun. Western medicine continues to research and further understand the physiological effects and benefits of acupuncture points.
There are several options at VOR for the treatment of pain and symptoms with acupuncture. Several of our team members are trained in either traditional needle acupuncture or needless acupuncture.
Needle Acupuncture:
Acupuncture needles can stimulate acupuncture points to reduce pain or to release muscles which are tight and restricted.
Gaetanne, one of our Registered Physiotherapists, also offers scalp acupuncture. Scalp acupuncture uses needles inserted along the scalp, to target certain regions of the head. She has used this treatment technique with concussion patients to help with pain, energy levels, clarity of vision, and sleep.
Needleless Acupuncture:
Needleless acupuncture is also called MPS (Micro-current Point Stimulation). This treatment involves the use of a hand-held battery operated device (see photo) which applies a brief concentrated micro-current to specific acupuncture and trigger points which naturally reduces nervous system STRESS and cortisol levels (stress hormone). This process relaxes muscle tone and releases the body’s natural painkillers – endorphins.
The MPS uses a DC (direct current) which can positively influence the human body with fast and effective relief of many conditions. DC is found in nature and is the current of your heart and nervous system. This is very different than AC (alternating current) which is in traditional TENS machines and electrical devices in your home. AC is not found in nature.
Because the DC current it is recognized by the nervous system as “familiar”, the Dolphin MPS can “release” the muscle tissue that impinges nerves and causes pain. By reducing stress on the nervous system MPS can regulate the autonomic nervous system (fight or flight), accelerate tissue healing, relieve chronic and acute pain, and reduce scar tissue. The use of MPS is grounded in evidence-based research and is scientifically documented.
Some conditions commonly treated at VOR with the MPS include headaches, migraines, neck pain, jaw/ear pain, concussion symptoms, poor sleep, anxiety and stress.
We are pleased to offer the choice of needle and needleless acupuncture services to our patients. These options allow our patients to choose which treatment they are most comfortable with.
