Massage Therapy

What is Massage Therapy?

Massage Therapy is the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body, including muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments, connective tissue, and scar tissue to improve overall function of the affected areas. Massage Therapy is a non-invasive way of treating dysfunction and pain, and can promote healing, relaxation, and overall well-being.

What can you expect from Massage Therapy at VOR?

A Massage Therapy treatment at VOR may consist of some or all of the following techniques:

Swedish Massage Therapy

Varying techniques and pressures, focusing on increasing circulation, relaxation, calming the nervous system, and loosening the muscles.

Fascial Work

Fascia is the connective tissue that flows throughout the body and connects everything. Sometimes fascia can get tight and develop scar tissue and restrictions that disrupt proper movement and function of all bodily structures. Massage Therapy can help relieve the tension in the fascial system.

Joint Mobilizations

A manual therapy technique used to passively increase joint mobility and decrease pain.

Trigger Point Release

Trigger points are a common cause of pain. They are taut bands within the muscle that can be painful when pressed on; causing a shortening of the muscle fiber which can cause referral of pain. Trigger point release is a deeper muscle technique that helps to release the tension within the muscle.

Therapist Assisted Stretching and Home Exercise

After loosening the muscles and tissues of the body, it is important to lengthen and promote proper muscle fiber alignment to maintain tissue health between visits. Our Massage Therapists can advise you on proper and safe exercises appropriate for you.

Cupping

Cups are placed on the skin to create suction. Suction mobilizes blood flow, softens tight muscles, and breaks adhesions to promote healing.

Ultrasound/Other Modalities

Ultrasound sends sound waves into the tissue causing a vibration to break up adhesions and promotes circulation to an area of injury. Treatments may also consist of heat or ice modalities.

Hot Stone Massage

Heated smooth stones are placed on the body, the stones can also be used by the therapist to help massage certain areas of the body. The heat of the stones promotes relaxation, allows for the same benefits of Swedish massage with the comfort of light pressure.

Needleless Acupuncture

Jasmina is trained in the use of Microcurrent Point Stimulation (MPS) which is a non-invasive way of stimulating acupuncture points and trigger points throughout the body. MPS compliments other massage techniques to help release muscle tissue that impinges on nerves and causes pain. (see Pain Management - MPS and Acupuncture on our website)

Pregnancy Massage

Aches, pains, and stiffness are common in pregnancy. Pre-natal massage helps to decrease these symptoms to make your pregnancy as comfortable as possible. Other common problems during pregnancy that can be assisted with Massage Therapy include sciatic pain, swollen wrists and ankles, hip pain, low back pain, and lower leg cramping.

TMJ Massage

A lot of daily stress is carried through the jaw, which can result in adhesions. Loosening the muscles and ligaments surrounding the TMJ, through massage, can help people who carry a lot of daily tension and stress in their jaw.

Here at VOR our motto is “quality, not quantity”. To compliment your massage, we may suggest 1 or 2 exercises or stretches to do at home to further enhance the benefit of the therapy. After all, our goal is to get you better!
