Athletic Therapy

What is Athletic Therapy?

Athletic Therapists (AT) are experts in the prevention and rehabilitation of injuries to muscles, joints, and bones. They are best known for providing on-site, emergency care to professional and amateur athletes in their given sport, and are often seen on the sidelines or running out on the playing surface to help athletes. ATs are also trained in the immediate recognition and management of concussions as well as concussion return to play protocols. These skills and techniques allow ATs to treat a variety of injuries sustained in everyday life as well as sports. ATs can treat injuries from a fall, post-surgical recovery, workplace injuries, sports or activity injuries, and motor vehicle accident injuries.

ATs focus on:

  • Injury prevention
  • Injury recognition
  • Injury rehabilitation

The ATs at VOR are trained in concussion rehabilitation for post-concussion syndrome and are an integral part of our concussion team. Julie, our Athletic Therapist, has additional training to facilitate ImPACT concussion testing, which is a computerized neurocognitive test used both pre-injury and post-injury. This test helps to guide the rehabilitation process when a concussion has been sustained.
